New Swedish government dismantles the Ministry of Environment

Today the new right wing government was installed in Sweden and one of its first moves on day one was to dismantle the entire Ministry of Environment. For the first time in decades Sweden won’t have an independent ministry for protection of the environment and transformation to a sustainable society. Instead, environmental policy will be transferred to the Ministry of Energy and Enterprise, headed by Ebba Thor from the right wing Chistian Democrats.

The Ministry of Environment has been crucial to the development of Swedish environmental policies over the past decades and has been an important force in the negotiations of many international agreements. It is indeed an ironic and tragic twist that this happens 50 years after the iconic Stockholm conference of 1972 and it implies that Sweden will lose its role in the international environmental work, and that the global efforts to reach the Paris agreement and Agenda 2030 will be weakened.
